Annemirl Bauer at DAS MINSK: An uncompromising voice of GDR art
The DAS MINSK art house in Potsdam dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to Annemirl Bauer. On November 7, 2026, the exhibition invites visitors from 10 AM to 7 PM to rediscover an artist whose independent visual language has long stood outside the art historical canon.
A work between personal experience and social resistance
Annemirl Bauer was born in 1939 in Jena and died in 1989 in East Berlin. Over more than three decades, she developed an independent position between painting, drawing, collage, and object art. Around 150 works from the late 1950s until her early death make the range of her creative output visible in Potsdam.
Bauer combined personal experiences with political and social conflicts. Her art focuses on gender relations, patriarchal power structures, self-empowerment, human rights, environmental destruction, and state oppression. The exhibition thus showcases not only a historical position of GDR art but also a reflection on freedom, responsibility, and resistance that extends into the present.
Painting, collage, and object as forms of self-assertion
The examination of her works leads through a diverse visual world. Paintings, works on paper, collages, and objects combine intense color fields with raw, found, or everyday materials. Wood, doors, drawers, and other carriers become image spaces where private memory and social reality overlap.
Bauer's engagement with the fragment is particularly powerful. Breaks do not appear as mere destruction but as open spots through which new perspectives emerge. The curatorial concept divides the retrospective into four thematic chapters, the titles of which are derived from words in the artist's works and writings.
A critical voice from the GDR
Bauer saw herself as a painter and uncompromising observer of her time. Her works responded to the repressions of SED politics and the visible and invisible power structures that shaped life in the GDR. The exhibition makes tangible how closely aesthetic experience, political vigilance, and personal self-assertion are interconnected in her work.
The exhibition is curated by Marie Gerbaulet, supported by Luisa Bachmann. It is created in close collaboration with Amrei Bauer, the estate administrator and founder and director of the Annemirl Bauer House in Niederwerbig. This connection merges art historical research with the vibrant memory of an extraordinary female artist's biography.
Exhibition atmosphere at DAS MINSK
DAS MINSK creates a special setting for this rediscovery. The architecture of the art house connects history, present, and cultural exchange. Between vibrant colors, angular shapes, different image carriers, and material traces, an exhibition atmosphere emerges that invites focused contemplation of the works.
The art experience thrives on the tension between intimacy and publicness: a personal image motif can suddenly appear as a social statement, while a political symbol develops a surprisingly sensual presence. This combination of painting, installation, materiality, and documentary accuracy opens various access points to cultural education.
Conclusion: Experience Annemirl Bauer live in Potsdam
The retrospective at DAS MINSK promises an intense art experience with an artist who has unjustly been overlooked for long. Visitors will encounter an independent position of GDR art, whose questions of freedom, care, power, and resistance remain urgent today. Those who understand art as aesthetic experience and as a societal discourse should definitely visit this exhibition live in Potsdam.
