75 Years of THW: An Exhibition on Aid, History, and Social Responsibility
On November 10, 2026, the exhibition 75 Years of Technical Relief Organization will be opened in the foyer of the Brandenburg State Parliament. This art experience in the historic center of Potsdam is dedicated to the development of THW, its statutory mandate in civil and disaster protection, and the commitment of around 88,000 volunteers.
A Journey Through Civil Protection
The exhibition takes us back to August 22, 1950, when Otto Lummitzsch was tasked with establishing a civilian order service. From the early missions to today's role in civil protection, it becomes evident how technical assistance, organized readiness, and volunteer engagement have shaped the history of THW.
History Comes Alive in the Foyer
The presentation combines historical context with vivid insights into the tasks, missions, and structures of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief. The focus is on volunteer work: people take responsibility for the protection and well-being of society, giving the exhibition a powerful social dimension.
Opening with Talks, Music, and Reception
The event starts at 6:00 PM with greetings from Prof. Dr. Ulrike Liedtke, President of the Brandenburg State Parliament. In discussion with the audience are Sabine Lackner, President of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, Dr. Maik Pawlowsky from the THW Federal Association, and Dr. Monika Lücke, THW State Representative for Berlin, Brandenburg, and Saxony-Anhalt.
The musical arrangement will be provided by Regine Daniels-Stoll from Frankfurt (Oder) on the cello. At 7:00 PM, a reception for THW and the Brandenburg State Fire Brigade Association will follow, including greetings, awards, and a buffet.
Conclusion: An Artistic Experience of Social Memory
The opening of the exhibition promises an aesthetic experience beyond classical painting or sculpture: here, social history is made accessible as cultural education, documentary presentation, and vivid examination of the works. Visitors will experience how technical assistance, solidarity, and volunteer work have taken shape over seven decades. Participation is worthwhile for anyone interested in contemporary history, disaster protection, and the engagement of the people behind THW.
