Annemirl Bauer at DAS MINSK: A uncompromising voice of East German art
The DAS MINSK art house in Potsdam dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to Annemirl Bauer. The exhibition makes visible an independent painter whose work directly connects personal experiences, societal conflicts, and political resistance. On November 1, 2026, the art house invites visitors to the exhibition and a public tour.
Painting between everyday life, protest, and self-determination
Annemirl Bauer was born in 1939 in Jena and studied at the School of Applied Arts in Sonneberg, the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, and the Berlin-Weissensee University of Art. As a painter and graphic artist, she developed a color-intensive, figurative, and expressive visual language. Her works tell, observe, parody, and take a stand.
The retrospective brings together paintings, drawings, collages, and objects from more than three decades. Around 150 works lead through an artistic cosmos where political repression, gender roles, social inequality, and the quest for personal freedom become visible. Bauer worked not only on classic canvas but also on paper, wood, textiles, and everyday objects. These materials give her art an immediate, physical presence.
An aesthetic experience with political tension
The atmosphere of the exhibition thrives on the interplay between vivid painting, spontaneous drawing, and unusual objects. Expressive lines meet sharpened figures, humorous visual ideas meet experiences of exclusion and state control. The contemplation of the works repeatedly leads to the question of how art remains visible and effective under political conditions.
Bauer was one of the critical and independent voices of East Germany. In the 1980s, she advocated for freedom of travel and thus came under the watch of the State Security. Repressions and a de facto professional ban complicated her artistic work. Nevertheless, her art retains remarkable energy: it contradicts, irritates, and asserts its own perspective.
Curating and cultural education
The exhibition is curated by Marie Gerbaulet, supported by Luisa Bachmann. The show is created in close collaboration with Amrei Bauer, the estate manager and founder and director of the Annemirl Bauer House in Niederwerbig. This connects the curation with art historical research, biographical closeness, and regional memory culture.
DAS MINSK complements the exhibition with public tours and additional educational offerings. On November 1, 2026, a public tour through the exhibition will take place at 2 PM. The event opens access to painting, the political art of East Germany, and the question of how artistic self-determination remains possible under repressive conditions.
Conclusion: Art that sharpens the perspective
The exhibition at DAS MINSK promises an intense art experience between colorful imagery, material experimentation, and political awareness. Those who view Annemirl Bauer's paintings, drawings, collages, and objects live encounter an artist whose aesthetic experience reaches up to the present. A visit to Potsdam enriches cultural education and opens new perspectives on art, memory, and resistance.
