Annemirl Bauer at DAS MINSK: An Uncompromising Voice of East German Art
The DAS MINSK Art House in Potsdam dedicates a comprehensive retrospective to Annemirl Bauer. The exhibition gathers paintings, drawings, works on paper, collages, and objects from more than three decades of artistic creation. At the center is a painter who connected personal experiences with societal conflicts and positioned herself against state repression, patriarchal power structures, and social injustice.
A Rediscovered Position in East German Art
Annemirl Bauer lived and worked in Berlin and Brandenburg. As a critical and independent voice from the GDR, she long remained outside the art historical canon. Her works showcase a committed art practice, where painting, drawing, collage, and object art become precise instruments of observation. The retrospective makes it visible how consistently Bauer translated questions of self-determination, human rights, and social responsibility into her visual language.
With around 150 works, the exhibition opens a broad insight into Bauer's artistic development from the late 1950s until her early death in 1989. The thematically curated presentation leads through four chapters. Depictions of roles and gender relations, self-empowerment, environmental destruction, and state oppression form recurring fields of tension.
In the examination of her works, personal intimacy meets societal analysis. Lines, surfaces, and overlapping visual signs unfold an immediate, at times resistant energy. Collages condense different temporal levels, while paintings and works on paper direct attention to bodies, power, and vulnerable realities of life.
Curating and Cultural Education
The exhibition is curated by Marie Gerbaulet with Luisa Bachmann as the curatorial assistant. It is created in close collaboration with Amrei Bauer, the estate administrator as well as founder and director of the Annemirl Bauer House in Niederwerbig. This connection of museum research, archival work, and regional cultural memory anchors the exhibition in a responsible engagement with art history.
The art experience at DAS MINSK connects aesthetic experience with cultural education. The exhibition atmosphere creates space for concentrated examination of the works and for questioning how art gains a stance under political conditions. Public tours and accompanying events deepen access to Bauer's biography, her network, and the social themes of her oeuvre.
An Exhibition Visit with Lasting Impact
The retrospective Annemirl Bauer at DAS MINSK awaits visitors with an intense connection of painting, drawing, collage, and object art. You can experience an artist whose works not only tell of a bygone era but also carry questions of freedom, responsibility, and self-assertion into the present. Those who wish to experience the aesthetic power and political precision of this extraordinary position firsthand should visit the exhibition live in Potsdam.
