Annemirl Bauer: An uncompromising voice of East German art at DAS MINSK
In autumn 2026, DAS MINSK art house in Potsdam will dedicate a comprehensive retrospective to painter and graphic artist Annemirl Bauer. The exhibition brings together paintings, works on paper, collages, and objects, providing an intense approach to an artist whose independent visual language is closely linked to questions of freedom, gender roles, social justice, and political repression.
A multi-layered art experience between painting and resistance
Annemirl Bauer was born in 1939 in Jena, studied at the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Art, and lived from 1976 in Niederwerbig near Potsdam. Her artistic practice ranges from color-intensive painting to expressive drawings and collages to object-like works. Central to her work are people from her personal environment as well as societal tensions that she made visible through precise observation and a distinctive, often playful language of images.
Colors, lines, and materials as political expressions
The exhibition makes it tangible how Bauer linked private perception with social analysis. Figures, faces, and everyday scenes appear in dynamic outlines, strong color contrasts, and open compositions. Paper, canvas, glass, furniture boards, and other unusual picture carriers expand the concept of painting and give the viewing of the works an immediate, physical dimension.
An artist between self-empowerment and censorship
Bauer saw herself as an uncompromising observer of her time. She addressed the role of women in a patriarchal society, criticized power structures, and advocated for freedom of movement and social justice. Following a petition against the restriction of travel freedom, she was expelled from the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR in 1984. The exhibition does not present these biographical experiences in isolation but shows their connection to artistic form.
Curating and cultural education
The retrospective is developed by Marie Gerbaulet with Luisa Bachmann as curatorial assistant. It comes about in close collaboration with Amrei Bauer, the estate administrator and director of the Annemirl Bauer House in Niederwerbig. With around 150 paintings, drawings, collages, and objects, the exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into more than three decades of artistic creation and invites a deeper engagement with GDR art, memory culture, and female self-assertion.
Conclusion: An exhibition that changes perspectives
Visitors can expect an intense aesthetic experience between vibrant color, sharp lines, personal closeness, and political clarity. Annemirl Bauer's work combines a sensual exhibition atmosphere with art-historical relevance and invites a reevaluation of established narratives in art history. Those who want to experience painting, drawing, and resistant art live should definitely visit this exhibition at DAS MINSK.
