Thalia - The Art House Cinema | Program & Tickets
The Thalia - The Art House Cinema in Potsdam-Babelsberg is a cinema with a developed identity, clear profile, and a strong role in the everyday life of the district. Those who visit the building at Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße 50 experience not just a screen, but a cultural venue that connects film art, community, and practical services. The official website features a daily updated program with trailer links, special series, children's and youth formats, as well as accessible offerings. At the same time, the cinema remains large enough for a broad audience with four halls, 709 seats, and its own café, yet small enough to maintain the typical neighborhood atmosphere that many visitors appreciate at this location. Particularly exciting is the mix of tradition and present: historical depth, modern screening times, family-friendly offerings, and a location that is easily accessible by S-Bahn, tram, and bus. Program, Screening Times, and Special Series
The program of Thalia does not follow the pattern of any multiplex, but rather the logic of a true art house cinema. On the homepage and the program page, current screening times, trailers, and changing film titles are at the center; additionally, there are clearly named series for children, families, discussions, sneak previews, and special film evenings. This structure is crucial for many search queries because users are not only looking for a film but for the entire experience: When is what showing, are there original versions, is the evening worth it with company, and can one find a program with a stance here? The website answers these questions through clearly structured areas such as Today in the Program, On the Weekend, Film Series at Thalia, Children's and Youth Cinema, as well as Unique and Regular Events. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/))
Particularly important is the diversity of formats. Thalia regularly shows series such as stroller cinema, queer film evenings, Litpotsdam, Filmreif - Cinema with Enjoyment!, knitting cinema, sneak previews, head cinema - psychoanalysis and film, omnibus. Cinema for all. Accessible. as well as Cineville preview. Additionally, there are neighborhood cinema - Your neighborhood, your cinema!, guests in the neighborhood, and other special dates. This range shows that the venue does not just screen films but curates themes and creates opportunities for conversation. The website also features offerings for schools, holiday cinema, children's film university, and various children's formats, making the cinema appealing to both cinephile audiences and families, daycare centers, school classes, and local initiatives. Therefore, those searching for thalia potsdam program, thalia potsdam tickets, or thalia art house cinema potsdam will find a venue that understands its program as a cultural overall offering. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/programm/))
For practical purposes, it is also relevant that the program page consistently works with ticket links and directly connects screening times with online ticketing. Those who prefer to drop by spontaneously can orient themselves at the box office, which, according to the official website, opens daily 30 minutes before the first screening. Thalia thus combines digital pre-information with a classic cinema visit on-site. This combination is important for search queries related to thalia potsdam opening hours, thalia potsdam tickets, or thalia the art house cinema reviews, as it shows that the cinema remains both planable and spontaneously experienceable. Those who want to discover a carefully curated program on an evening, rather than just watching a film, will find exactly the kind of selection that defines an art house cinema. Directions, Public Transport, and Parking in Babelsberg
The location of Thalia is a clear advantage for anyone looking for a cinema in Potsdam with good accessibility. The official contact and directions page explicitly recommends arriving by bicycle or public transport. Mentioned are the S-Bahn line S7 to Babelsberg, tram lines 94 and 99 to Wattstr., as well as bus lines 601 to Horstweg/Großbeerenstr. and 690, 693, and 694 to Rathaus Babelsberg. For those arriving by car, the website points out parking options in the public street space, including in Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße, Benzstraße, and Schulstraße. For search queries such as thalia potsdam directions, thalia potsdam parking, or thalia - the art house cinema rudolf-breitscheid-straße potsdam-babelsberg, these are the central pieces of information that provide immediate assistance. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kontakt-anfahrt/))
The official city and tourism site also emphasizes the integration of the venue in Babelsberg and classifies Thalia together with other Potsdam cinemas into the local cinema landscape. This aligns well with the self-understanding of the location: not remote, but right in the neighborhood, making it easily combinable with everyday routes. Those arriving by train or S-Bahn benefit from short transfers and a clearly designated stop. Those coming on foot from the neighborhood enjoy the central location on Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße. However, those driving should keep an eye on the public street space in good time, as the official website does not mention any visitor parking but only the surrounding streets. Thus, the recommendation is clear: For a relaxed evening, public transport is usually the simplest solution. ([potsdam.de](https://www.potsdam.de/de/content/kinos-potsdam?utm_source=openai))
The journey is also part of the user experience because Thalia is not understood as a mere event hall but as a neighborhood cinema. The paths to the venue are short enough to enjoy a coffee before the screening or to stay in the Babelsberg area after the film. This combination of accessibility and neighborhood character makes the location interesting for people looking for a cinema with an urban yet not hectic atmosphere. Those asking about a film evening often want to know the logistical details: Where do I transfer, how do I get back after the screening, and is parking uncomplicated? Thalia answers these questions transparently and without detours. This creates a clear service advantage that plays an important role in the evaluation of location, program, and visitor-friendliness. History and Development of Thalia in Potsdam-Babelsberg
The history of Thalia officially begins in February 1918, reaching far back into the cinema culture of the 20th century. According to its own cinema info page, the venue has experienced five political systems and many crises in its more than one hundred-year history. This is more than a pretty historical footnote, as it explains why the cinema is so strongly associated with the term tradition today. The location has survived World War II, the period of Soviet control, the GDR, the turning point, and the market consolidation of the Potsdam cinema market. In April 1945, the cinema had to briefly turn off the lights but was able to reopen in the same year in an undamaged hall. The continuity of the place is thus not merely symbolic but part of a real survival story. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
During the GDR era, Thalia premiered films such as Spur der Steine, making the location historically interesting as well. After the turning point, the venue survived the great Potsdam cinema crisis and was reestablished in 1997 as a miniplex with four halls and 709 seats. This phase marks the transition from the classic neighborhood cinema to the modern, multi-hall location. Initially, commercial films were primarily shown there; this was initially successful until the competition from UCI at Potsdam Central Station significantly changed visitor numbers. This created the necessity to redefine the profile. Since 2001, the Thalia program cinemas have stood for a clear focus on film art, curated series, and an audience that consciously seeks quality over mere quantity. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
The own website and Potsdam tourism information also emphasize that Thalia is not only historically grown but also excellent. In 2016, it was awarded the best art house cinema in Germany. The tourism site adds that the venue, reopened in 1997, was designed as a comfortable arthouse with four halls and 709 seats, and that the foyer features a large glass dome, while hall 1 retains its proportions as well as stage and event technology. This conveys a good impression of why Thalia appears both old and new: it has visible historical substance but is functionally oriented towards contemporary uses. This dual character makes the location relevant for visitors searching for thalia the art house cinema potsdam or thalia the art house cinema potsdam babelsberg. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
The cultural role of the venue has also historically developed. On the cinema info page, Thalia is described as a fixed and central part of the cultural life in Babelsberg and Potsdam. This is complemented by its positioning as a neighborhood cinema that connects local institutions, conversation partners, directors, producers, and audiences. This development is important because it explains why Thalia today is not just a place for films but also for discourse, youth offerings, discussion series, and collaborations. From a historical perspective, the venue exemplifies many German arthouse cinemas that have emerged from classic cinema culture and are now asserting themselves as vibrant cultural places in the present. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
Halls, Capacity, and Private Rentals
With four halls and a total of 709 seats, Thalia is remarkably well-equipped for an art house cinema. The hall capacities are specifically named on the Rent Me page: Hall 1 with 285 seats, Hall 2 with 177 seats, Hall 3 with 66 seats, and Hall 4 with 84 seats. This structure is helpful for search queries such as thalia potsdam hall plan, thalia potsdam prices, or thalia potsdam tickets, as it makes the size proportions of the venue visible. The official presentation also shows that the cinema is not only intended for regular screenings but also for exclusive bookings and private events. The stage and event technology in hall 1 are an additional indication that the largest room is suitable not only for film screenings but also for presentations and events. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/miet-mich/))
The offer Rent Me! is aimed at people who want to have an entire cinema hall for themselves. The website explicitly mentions film evenings, PlayStation sessions, or children's birthdays in their own hall. For certain time slots, fixed prices are listed: In the first time slot between 10 and 12:30 PM, usually in hall 3 or 4, the private use costs 280 euros for up to 10 people; for children's birthdays, 190 euros for up to 8 children and 2 accompanying persons are mentioned, including a mini bag of popcorn and Bionade. In the second time slot between 12:30 and 3 PM or between 3 and 5 PM, the prices vary depending on the day of the week and hall, about 990 euros for hall 1 from Monday to Thursday and 1,200 euros from Friday to Sunday. These figures clearly show that Thalia also operates professionally in the event sector. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/miet-mich/))
For visitor perception, the spatial experience is also important. The tourism information highlights the large glass dome in the foyer and describes hall 1 as a space with a stage and existing event technology. This fits well with the profile of the venue as a versatile location that lies between arthouse cinema, discussion place, and small event stage. Such details are interesting for people who do not just want to see a film but are looking for an ambiance suitable for lectures, premieres, meetings, or special occasions. Thalia thus does not appear as a neutral functional space but as a characterful place with recognizable brand value. This visual and spatial impression plays an important role in the search logic surrounding thalia the art house cinema reviews or thalia - the art house cinema photos. ([tourismusverband-potsdam.de](https://tourismusverband-potsdam.de/thalia-programmkino/?utm_source=openai))
Economically, the hall structure is also relevant because it shows that the cinema can cater to both large and small event formats. Large halls allow for regular film starts, audience discussions, or special screenings with a wider reach. Smaller halls, on the other hand, are suitable for intimate screenings, children's birthdays, or exclusive corporate and friends' gatherings. This makes the location flexible and explains why it is perceived in Potsdam not only as a cinema but also as a rentable cultural venue. Those looking for a space with cinema character in Babelsberg will not receive a generic event space here but a specifically defined cinema environment with clear prices, a clear hall structure, and long-standing experience in event operations. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/miet-mich/))
Children's Cinema, Schools, and Family Offers
A central part of the Thalia profile is children's and youth work. The cinema info page explicitly states that Maxis cinema adventure aims to enable the very first cinema visit, while the sparrow cinema playfully introduces the youngest to the medium. Additionally, there are regular meetings of Potsdam daycare centers as well as daily bookable school screenings of pedagogically relevant films. This is particularly important for the search intent behind terms like thalia potsdam stroller cinema, thalia potsdam program, or thalia potsdam family cinema, as the cinema does not only target adults and cinephiles but specifically focuses on families, educational institutions, and young target groups. The official website understands these offerings as media educational work and as a contribution to quality education in the cinema experience. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
Particularly noteworthy is the children's film university in collaboration with the Film University Konrad Wolf and the Potsdam Film Museum. The cinema info page describes it as a unique project in Europe. This shows that Thalia not only includes a children's film in its program but actively participates in cultural youth work. Additional family-friendly formats such as stroller cinema, holiday cinema, cinema for schools, and children's birthdays are clearly named on the website. This breadth is exceptional for an art house cinema because it does not merely rely on occasional children's screenings but offers a complete infrastructure for different life situations. Therefore, those wanting to go to the cinema with small children will find a well-thought-out solution here instead of an improvised exception offer. ([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
The current program structure also emphasizes this focus. On the program page, children's and family films regularly appear alongside arthouse titles, documentaries, and special series. This creates a mix that allows for both Sunday outings with the family and targeted visits for school classes or educational groups. The official cinema info page also emphasizes that prices are particularly moderate for children and young people. This is an important point when considering search queries for thalia potsdam prices, thalia potsdam tickets, or thalia the art house cinema reviews: Not only the film selection but also accessibility through fair conditions contributes to the attractiveness of the venue. ([thalia potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
Family-friendliness at Thalia is not only reflected in program points but also in the atmosphere. The venue sees itself as a meeting place for young and old and describes itself as a place of encounter and exchange. This self-understanding is important for parents, grandparents, and educational companions because it signals that children are welcome and not just tolerated. The connection of film art and family-friendly practice creates an environment where cinema visits become not stressful but planable and pleasant. Thus, Thalia clearly distinguishes itself from anonymous multiplexes and positions itself as a cultural anchor in the Babelsberg district. ([thalia.potsdam.de](https://www.thalia.potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
Accessibility, Cinema Café, and Cinema Culture in Everyday Life
Accessibility at Thalia is not a footnote but part of the program. The series Omnibus. Cinema for all. Accessible. in cooperation with Oberlinhaus explicitly targets people with and without disabilities. According to the official description, cinema hall and seats are accessible, the volume is reduced, brightness increased, advertisements are omitted, and audio descriptions and subtitles are offered via the Greta app. These details are crucial for many visitors and provide a concrete service level for search queries like thalia potsdam accessible or thalia the art house cinema photos. Access is thus considered not only structurally but also sensorily and content-wise. ([thalia.potsdam.de](https://www.thalia.potsdam.de/einmalig/omnibus-kino-fuer-alle-barrierefrei/?utm_source=openai))
Additionally, Thalia takes its role as a social place seriously. The cinema info page describes the venue as a meeting point for young and old, a place for discussion, and a stage for local collaborations. A weekly documentary film series brings social and political topics to discussion, directors, producers, and actors regularly come to the venue, and festivals like Moving History or Berlinale goes Kiez have taken place here. This creates a cinema experience that goes beyond the mere film and promotes conversation, reflection, and exchange. Those searching for thalia program cinemas potsdam are often looking for exactly this: a cinema that curates, embeds, and provides cultural context. ([thalia.potsdam.de](https://www.thalia.potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
Part of the everyday life of the venue is also the cinema café KONSUM, which is described on the cinema info page with snacks, sandwiches, flammkuchen, homemade lemonades, draft beer, coffee, tea, and cocktails. For a location of this type, this is more than just gastronomy, as it significantly enhances the quality of stay. People who want to stay before or after the screening find a place to arrive and continue the conversation. Combined with the daily opening hours, which begin 30 minutes before the first screening, a clear service character emerges. Thalia is thus not only a space for film but a complete evening venue. Those planning a cultural evening can connect film, conversation, and break at one place without having to account for additional routes. ([thalia.potsdam.de](https://www.thalia.potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
The associations also reflect the cultural ambition. Thalia is a member of Europa Cinemas, the Association of Cinema Guild of German Film Art Theaters e.V., and the Confédération Internationale des Cinémas d’art et essai. This places the venue within a network of program and arthouse cinemas that understand film culture not as mass merchandise but as a curated experience. For search queries for thalia the art house cinema potsdam or thalia art house cinema potsdam, this is a strong quality feature, as it secures the cinema's positioning beyond mere self-presentation. Together with its history, program diversity, accessibility, and café operation, a consistent picture emerges: Thalia is a local cinema with international connectivity and a very clear awareness of its cultural role. Children's Cinema, Schools, and Family Offers

([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kinoinfos/))
([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/programm/))
([thalia-potsdam.de](https://www.thalia-potsdam.de/service/kontakt-anfahrt/))
The current program structure also emphasizes this focus. On the program page, children's and family films regularly appear alongside arthouse titles, documentaries, and special series. Came to watch an English language film in original language and was half an hour early so went into the bar and sat on a stool / took coat off and tried to relax / waiting to be served so that I could ask for a glass of wine. Have to say I know I’m of a certain age and invisible to men these days but the sheer number of men who came to the bar and were served while I was sitting there fiddling with film flyers - well it really wasn’t pleasant and I ended up getting quite cross which doesn’t really help any mood. Can staff please make a bit more of an effort to actually serve customers not just the ones who are male. I did get an apology from one of the staff but it’s really about paying attention. A lone woman at the bar without a drink. Not too hard to simply ask me if there’s anything I need.

Sorry but last Thursday screening of Kings Land was a joke ... the sound was obviously mono, and the volume less than a TV ... the door boy gets 5 points for looking like jesusz, however ZERO for responding like a Beamter 🤔😭

Super cinema showing many indie movies, also in original language with german subs on Mondays. Inside is very nicely decorated, there is a kind of indoor yard with a bar.
