Hedge Theater at the New Palace | Events & Tickets
The Hedge Theater at the New Palace is one of the most impressive open-air venues in Potsdam, as garden art, history, and summer stage come together in a way that is rarely found. In Sanssouci Park, north of the New Palace, lies a historically influenced open-air stage that has been used for events again since 2012 and is now primarily associated with the Theater Poetenpack. Therefore, anyone searching for Hedge Theater Potsdam, Hedge Theater Park Sanssouci, or Hedge Theater at the New Palace is not only looking for a venue but also a piece of living cultural history in the open air. The special effect arises from the combination of lawn stage, hedge space, pergola, and the immediate proximity to one of the most famous palace ensembles in Brandenburg. This atmosphere makes the place so attractive for summer theater, concerts, readings, and special occasions. At the same time, the Hedge Theater is not just any event space but a place with Friedrichian origins that is now used carefully and seasonally. The result is a performance venue that feels quiet, exclusive, and at the same time very close to the audience, as the stage almost seamlessly integrates into the park landscape. Upcoming Events and Theater Poetenpack at the Hedge Theater
The most important search impulse around this location is clearly: What’s next at the Hedge Theater at the New Palace? The official pages show that the venue is closely linked to the Theater Poetenpack and comes to life as a summer stage year after year. On the venue page, the ensemble announces the Theater Summer Sanssouci 2026 and names the premiere of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov on June 25, 2026, at 7:30 PM at the Hedge Theater Potsdam, Am Neuen Palais, as the kickoff. The theater's homepage also highlights The Three Musketeers, as well as a guided bike tour to the Hedge Theater with a piece introduction. This is important for anyone looking for upcoming events, programs, or tickets: The venue is not only used for individual guest performances but as an integral part of an entire summer theater concept. Anyone wanting to understand the season should therefore not only look at a single performance but at the interplay of repertoire, open-air season, and the respective accompanying formats. This creates a varied program that combines classic material, humorous productions, and summer excursions. Thus, the Hedge Theater is not merely a backdrop for an evening performance but a central part of a curated cultural experience that is planned over several weeks or months. ([theater-poetenpack.de](https://www.theater-poetenpack.de/service/spielorte/heckentheater))
The fact that the stage is regularly used in other years is demonstrated by several official SPSG event pages. Productions such as Tartuffe, The Rape of the Sabine Women, or other summer theater evenings appear at the same location, always with notes on weather-dependent changes and the respective linked ticket sales. From this, a clear picture can be derived for the search intent Hedge Theater upcoming events: The program is seasonal, classically influenced, and open to various formats. In addition to drama and comedy, readings, musical evenings, or special formats also appear in the event calendar. The location is therefore suitable not only for theater lovers but for visitors who are specifically looking for a special cultural experience in Sanssouci Park. Those who plan early have the best chances of suitable performances, as demand arises not least due to the special setting and limited seating. Especially at a location with such a unique character, early orientation through the official pages of the Theater Poetenpack and the SPSG is worthwhile, as programs, dates, and possible changes are first published there. History of the Hedge Theater at the New Palace
The historical depth is one of the strongest reasons why the Hedge Theater at the New Palace stands out so much from the usual offerings. The SPSG describes the place as a hidden theater in the north of the New Palace for over 150 years. It was created in connection with the construction of the New Palace, which Frederick the Great had built from 1763 to 1769 after the Seven Years' War. In the process, the surrounding garden areas were redesigned, and the Hedge Theater was also laid out for the pleasures of the monarch and his guests. The court gardener Heinrich Christian Eckstein was responsible for the design. From today’s perspective, this facility appears as a consciously composed connection of architecture, nature, and courtly representation. Particularly interesting is its classification as a symmetrical counterpart to the southern garden salon with its iron arbors and rose planting. This makes it clear that the Hedge Theater is not randomly located in the park but is embedded in a carefully ordered landscape concept. Those interested in history, garden art, or Friedrichian culture will find here much more than a beautiful stage. The place tells of the representative claims of the Prussian court, but also of the desire to integrate entertainment, music, and drama into a park landscape that continues to impress today. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))
Equally remarkable is the rediscovery and restoration of the site. The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation points out that the Friends of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens e.V. played a crucial role in the restoration and that trees from the original period are still present today. Since 2012, the Hedge Theater has been available for events again, establishing the historical site not only as preserved but as a newly active performance venue. This combination of preservation and use creates the charm: The theater is neither a museum piece nor a mere backdrop but a reactivated open space with historical memory. For this reason, the stage appears particularly authentic when theater is performed again in the summer. The past is visible without overshadowing the present use. Instead, it enhances the impact of each performance. Therefore, anyone looking for special features, history, or background information will find in the Hedge Theater an example of how garden art, monument preservation, and cultural programming can elegantly come together. The historical continuity, the partially preserved planting, and the reconstructive care are among the most important unique features of this location. Directions, Parking, and Visitor Center at the New Palace
For visitors specifically looking for directions or parking at the Hedge Theater at the New Palace, the official information is clear and practical. The nearest stop is Potsdam, Neues Palais. The address of the venue is also located there: Neues Palais, Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam. For cars and buses, the SPSG names the paid parking lot P3 – Am Neuen Palais as the central parking option. This is particularly important because the location in Sanssouci Park is well accessible but is not an urban city center location. Therefore, those arriving by car should consciously plan parking time and walking distance. Additionally, there are notes for organizers regarding delivery: The SPSG mentions access via Ökonomieweg and Mopke. This shows that the location, despite its historical surroundings, is also logistically usable, albeit with clear guidelines. Especially for open-air productions or special events, this information is valuable as it provides planning security. The area around the New Palace is thus structured for both the audience and production teams. For the search intent Hedge Theater parking or Hedge Theater directions, it is therefore crucial to keep an eye on the official traffic situation and the respective event situation. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))
Another practical point of contact is the Visitor Center New Palace located nearby. There, visitors can prepare for or wind down their stay at the New Palace and in Sanssouci Park. Tickets, combination tickets, annual passes, and event tickets are available at the ticket counters; additionally, there is a museum shop offer, the Café Caroline, a relaxation room, and several services on site. Particularly useful is the model of Sanssouci Park, which is explained on an interactive touch table, as well as the barrier-free bronze cast model in front of the building, which makes the park tactilely experienceable. Toilets are also available there, including a barrier-free toilet. For visitors to the Hedge Theater, this is relevant because there is a reliable infrastructure in the immediate vicinity, even though there are no permanent toilets at the venue itself. Therefore, anyone who has some time before a performance can easily combine their visit to the Hedge Theater with a stop at the Visitor Center. This creates not just a simple theater appointment but a rounded excursion into the cultural landscape of Sanssouci. Especially on summer evenings, the interplay of arrival, stay, and infrastructure is an important part of the overall quality. Photos, Impressions, and the Special Open-Air Atmosphere
The search for photos of the Hedge Theater at the New Palace quickly leads to the actual core of this location: the atmosphere. The SPSG presents several views of the area in its impressions, including aerial photos and sightlines to the stage. The Theater Poetenpack also shows image material from the ongoing summer operation on the venue page. This is no coincidence, as the place strongly lives from the visual impact of its structure. With the open stage, the protective hedge architecture, the pergola, and the lawn area, a visual language emerges that is directly associated with summer theater. Unlike in a closed hall, light, weather, and time of day noticeably change the impression. For this reason, the Hedge Theater is so attractive for photos, social media, and Google Discover suitability: The place is not only functional but also visually narrative. Those looking for images do not find the sterile aesthetics of a multipurpose hall but a backdrop that is already part of the narrative. This also explains why search terms like Hedge Theater photos or images of Hedge Theater at the New Palace appear so frequently. The location offers exactly that mix of history, greenery, and open-air atmosphere that becomes immediately recognizable in photos and remains memorable. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))
Even in the sober facts about the area and seating, it shows how well the place is designed for audience experiences. The SPSG states a total of 2,000 square meters, of which 900 square meters are water-bound path surface. Additionally, about 275 chairs are available, while up to 300 people are possible. For the intended use, this means: The Hedge Theater is large enough for a noticeable community but small enough to maintain an intimate and focused atmosphere. This balance is one of the greatest advantages of the place. Furthermore, the stage, the audience area, and the pergola can be rented together. Therefore, those searching for reviews often encounter a similar mood: historical, charming, summery, special. According to the Google data you provided, the location has 4.7 stars from 75 reviews, which fits well with the positive impression created by the official presentation. In summary, a place emerges that looks strong in photos but is even more impressive live. For visitors who prioritize atmosphere over pure functionality, this is the great strength of the Hedge Theater. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))
Tickets, Seats, and Practical Tips for Your Visit
For tickets, seats, and practical tips, the Hedge Theater is a location with clear but season-dependent framework conditions. The SPSG describes the place as an open-air venue for concerts, theater, readings, lectures, standing receptions, and free weddings. At the same time, it mentions a booking period from April to October, which emphasizes the summer character of the place. It is particularly important to note that there is no weather protection. Anyone planning or attending an event should therefore take the weather seriously, as poor weather can lead to program changes or cancellations. The practical advantage is that the venue was designed from the outset for the outdoor space and does not appear improvised. For the ticket question, the official routes are currently clear: The Theater Poetenpack refers to online booking via oeticket, while SPSG event pages sometimes name Reservix as a ticket partner. For this reason, it is advisable to always check the respective event page before purchasing, as providers, prices, and contingents may vary depending on the production. Anyone interested in the program should also regularly monitor the publications of the Theater Poetenpack and the SPSG, as dates, casts, and notes are updated there first. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))
Practical facilities also include that catering is possible and the caterer can be freely chosen in consultation with the foundation. This is particularly interesting for closed events, receptions, or cultural special formats. On the other hand, one should know that there are no toilets directly on site; however, the toilets of the Visitor Center New Palace are available upon request, or a WC container can be set up. The location is wheelchair accessible, which is an important plus for accessibility. Thus, it shows: The Hedge Theater is historical and atmospheric but surprisingly clearly regulated in practical use. For event planning, evening visits, or cultural appointments, the place offers a reliable mix of charm and organization. Those wishing to visit the Hedge Theater at the New Palace should ideally arrive early, consider the parking situation, check the current program on the official pages, and consciously embrace the special character of this summer venue. Exactly therein lies the fascination: A historical garden space becomes a lively stage without losing its origins. This makes every performance, every photo, and every visit a little more extraordinary than elsewhere. ([spsg.de](https://www.spsg.de/en/rental-locations/eventlocation/new-palace-hedge-theater))

The area around the New Palace is thus structured for both the audience and production teams. For the search intent Hedge Theater parking or Hedge Theater directions, it is therefore crucial to keep an eye on the official traffic situation and the respective event situation.

What a beautiful and aesthetic view! The monument is still in great shape. Hats off to the people and the government too. I loved the place, oh sorry, palace! 😅 Its historical significance is also nice. It was great to learn about its history. I guess it’s one of the best places in Potsdam. Another thing I liked is that some parts of the palace are still in use for educational purposes; that’s really commendable. For transportation, it’s close to a bus stop, so getting around is easy. I enjoyed visiting Neuen Palais. One thing I noticed that I didn’t like is that there were names of couples carved on the walls of the palace, not just in one spot but in a few different places. I think people shouldn’t do that, and the government should make an effort to erase those and maintain the historical monument. Aside from that one complaint, everything else is just beautiful. The garden around and the walking/jogging track that extends straight and long from the palace... it’s all just scenic beauty. Ahhh... Also, the multiple sculptures carved on the walls, both front and back, as well as in the garden surrounding the palace, are still in good condition, and their craftsmanship is definitely worth praising. If you look closely, you’ll see a variety of sculptures. One tip for tourists: summer is the best season to visit Potsdam!! As a tourist, I had a great time here. You should definitely visit the palace, spend some peaceful time, and soak in the nice vibe while checking out a few other places around. Have fun...!

Not easy to reach by public transportation - but doable. They have a bar where you can buy food, snacks, and drinks. You can even borrow a blanket. Bring warm clothes (!), because it gets really chilly in the park in the evening.

I had a wonderful evening here with my wife... we were entertained very well and humorously (The Three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas). The venue is lovely and the seating isn't too cramped. Of course, the weather has to cooperate. We had booked the premiere, which had to be postponed due to a severe weather warning. The rescheduling went smoothly and the weather on the night of the performance was perfect.
