A House Full of History Opens Its Doors in Babelsberg

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, the AWO Culture House Babelsberg invites you to the Day of Open Monuments. Between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, visitors can experience the historical building up close during tours at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The offer is free of charge and is aimed at all those who want to discover local history, architecture, and vibrant neighborhood culture on site.

History You Can Feel

The current culture house was once the town hall of Nowawes and was inaugurated in 1899 according to plans by Julius Otto Kerwien. Even from the outside, the Neo-Gothic brick building with its distinctive tower shapes the cityscape of Babelsberg. Entering the house allows you to experience not only architectural history but also a piece of Potsdam's identity that has developed over many decades.

Guided Tours with Behind-the-Scenes Insights

The approximately one-hour tours provide insights into various rooms of the house and share backgrounds, details, and anecdotes about the development from town hall to neighborhood cultural venue. In collaboration with the Rotes Nowawes Historical Workshop e.V., a tour is created that brings together knowledge, atmosphere, and neighborhood history. This is what makes this monument day so special: Here, historical substance meets lived present.

A Place for Encounter and Participation

The AWO Culture House Babelsberg today represents events, projects, courses, and workshops. It is a house of open doors, supported by the AWO District Association Potsdam e.V. and characterized by cultural, project, and community house work. The mix of social engagement, event planning, and regional roots gives the place a special audience atmosphere.

Accessible Arrival and Relaxed Arrival

The location on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße makes arrival uncomplicated. The house is easily accessible by S-Bahn, bus, and tram; the Babelsberg S-Bahn station is just a few minutes' walk away. Additionally, the culture house is wheelchair accessible, with an elevator connecting the courtyard to the building. Thus, the visit is comfortable and without obstacles.

The Day of Open Monuments at AWO Culture House Babelsberg uniquely combines monument preservation, neighborhood history, and vibrant culture. If you want to experience architecture not just visually but tangibly, you should mark this date and attend the live tour.
