Memories, Breaks, and New Beginnings: Curator's Tour at the Lindenstraße Memorial
The curator's tour through the special exhibition “Life After Imprisonment. Former Political Prisoners of the GDR Report” opens on December 1, 2026, offering a deeper access to the life stories of political prisoners of the GDR. Curator Martina Reimann explains the historical contexts and guides through an exhibition that focuses on the often lifelong consequences of political imprisonment.
When Imprisonment Continues After Release
The focus is on the accounts of 20 former political prisoners who were incarcerated in the Potsdam remand prison, in the Cottbus correctional facility, or in both locations. Their biographies tell of professional breaks, familial separations, psychological burdens, and the long paths of personal processing.
Biographical Testimonies and Personal Memorabilia
The exhibition connects previously unknown interview sequences with personal memorabilia and characterful portraits by photographer Göran Gnaudschun. This creates an intense exhibition atmosphere where historical research and individual memory directly encounter one another. The consideration of works is not directed at art in the narrower sense, but at the aesthetic and documentary presentation of eyewitness accounts.
Historical Contextualization and Cultural Education
The Lindenstraße Memorial served as a remand prison of state security for the Potsdam district during the GDR. The tour contextualizes personal experiences within the history of political persecution and repression. At the same time, it makes visible how political imprisonment could shape families, social relationships, and professional life paths over decades.
A Limited Artistic Experience of Memory
The tour is limited to a maximum of 20 participants and offers room for a concentrated engagement with the presented voices. The combination of contemporary history, oral history, photography, installation, and museum curation creates a reflective artistic experience and an intense aesthetic experience at the historical site.
The curator's tour invites participants to view history not as a closed epoch but as a contemporary experience for those affected and their relatives. Anyone wishing to understand political persecution, memory culture, and the aftermath of the SED dictatorship will experience a knowledgeable and touching tour here.
